When Britney Spears took singing lessons as she was preparing for her concert tour, those who never bothered to learn singing made uneducated comments, laughing at her endeavors. She focused to get only the best singing practices like singorama and others to prove her singing efforts. Now, for those who know what singing is all about know that what Ms. Spears was doing was to keep her vocal health healthy and maintain her vocal quality by re-training her body to do the vocal warm-ups and breathing exercises that made her the singing star that she is.
Just ask all the other singers there, male and female, pop, opera, Broadway, even the punk rock singers – they all do their breathing and warm-up exercises. Why? So they can reach those notes they want to belt out their voices to, be more dramatic on the stage, and the most important thing of all, to keep to the key and reach higher notes and holding them.
All singers know that the secret to singing, at least one of them, is knowing how to breath and hold that breath. They use their diaphragms instead of just screaming their voices. Just listen to the really good voices out there, Aguillera, Madonna, Streisand, Spears, Lambert, Tivo, even Bieber. They know how to use their diaphragms.
Breathing, in singing, is an art that has to be perfected, otherwise all the singing and the natural talent fail into mediocrity. Control of the breath begins from the moment the air is inhaled to the sound getting emitted and then finally released. The stronger the diaphragm is, the better the control in holding that note and not go out of tune.
The technique to breathing is learned through professional singing lessons, and it is hard work. To keep the diaphragm strong, the body has to be well nourished and conditioned. Eating the right foods and doing the workouts are very important. Ever wonder how Madonna could dance through her concerts effortlessly and sing effortlessly all the while? This is because she goes through rigorous vocal and physical training to get where she was and is still currently there, despite being in the scene for more than thirty years. Those of her caliber do the same thing, going through the rigorous exercises to strengthen their diaphragm and lengthen their breathing capacity. All these have to be learned while in singing school.
Now, back to Britney: she did the right thing by taking those singing lessons. Otherwise, she would not be the superstar singing sensation that she is. And that is the aim of all singers, to be a star and entertain a crowd of hundreds of thousands. By breathing the right way!
